Renewable gas for industrial burners

Decentralized renewable solutions for process heat in industrial processes

Identification

To lower use of fossil fuels, cost-efficient, pre-fabricated, gasification modules are used that can create renewable gas from local biomass residues, directly at the customers' manufacturing plants.

One of the major unsolved obstacles in making industrial processes fossil free is creating high quality process heat. Until now, fossil fuels have been the only cost-efficient and reliable option to produce process heat that can secure the required product quality. MEVA’s solution uses locally-produced biomass residues can be used to create a renewable gas replacement, including fine fraction biomass such as sawdust, rise husks and wood fiber, which many industries currently struggle to dispose of. The decentralized, renewable solution creates a local circular system, cutting down costs and negative impacts.

Implementation Stories

Renewable gas for industrial burners by Meva Energy
Implemented by Inter IKEA Group in Zbaszynek (Poland) in 2021

Meva Energy has signed a green energy contract worth EUR 23M with IKEA Industry to produce long term renewable power from wood residue. In less than 3 years a Meva Energy power plant converting low value wood residue to renewable gas will be in place at IKEA Industry’s production unit in Zbaszynek, Poland. The collaboration is an investment in on-site renewable power, and introduces a novel and highly efficient technology to produce green energy. This agreement specifies that Meva Energy will deliver and sell power and wood residue reception services for a period of 10 years to IKEA Industry. This installation will greatly reduce the CO2 emissions by 14 000 tons per year, along with reducing the number of wood residue truck transport leaving the factory (reduced by roughly 300 trucks per year). This contributed to IKEA’s goal of transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2025.

Result

The plant will reduce its CO2 emissions with 14.000 tons per year compared with the carbon footprint of the Polish grid power. Moreover, the number of truck transports of wood residue leaving the Zbaszynek factory for external disposal will be reduced with about 300 trucks per year.

The environmental benefits

  • Uses low cost, fine fraction biomass
  • Enables fossil free production by removing process heat emissions
  • Modular, pre-fabricated gasification units allows for low capital expenditure
  • Constant gas quality from entrained flow gasification
04.

The Financial benefits

  • A tissue producer can save 19% of the gas bill for process heat. Above that comes the market value of being able to offer fossil free tissue production.
