Integrating large-scale long-duration energy storage with renewable generation, electricity grids and clean energy parks

Maturity stage TRL 6 / 7 - Prototype demonstration 1:1

RE-Balance™ integration of CleanCAES or other large-scale long-duration electricity storage with renewable generation, electricity grids and large users in clean energy park (especially the electrolysis and the H2 economy), patent pending system. It takes renewables and industry (largely?) off-grid, reducing costs and increasing plant efficiency and life, and reducing the biggest regulatory and commercial risks; also improves safety. Greatly reduces the costs of reinforcing the grid. The biggest source of risks (cost, timescale, regulatory, commercial) is saturated energy grids with volatile prices and fast-changing regulations. Intermittency causes 10-15% inefficiency in electrolysis, and 2½–7 times as much plant must be built per unit of output. Connecting 1GW offshore wind from 2030 requires £3bn / €3.6bn onshore grid reinforcement, + build / connect / procure balancing & ancillary services, + 10% of that p.a. forever; this reduces it to local grid reinforcement only.
