Pinovo - Clean Circular Blasting

Zero emission of paint microplastics and grit from surface treatment of industrial, infrastructure and marine assets

Identification

Pinovo AS's patented circular sandblasting technology stops microplastics emissions into the environment, and grit entering the workspace. Pinovo's technology also delivers superior surface quality, lengthening the asset's life, at a lower cost.

Over its normal life, paint is removed during surface treatment/maintenance. The predominant methods of surface maintenance are open grit blasting and water jet blasting. They crush old paint into microplastics, and if these microplastics are not collected (and for the most part, with the traditional systems they are not!), those paint microplastics are released into the environment. To tackle this challenge, the Pinovo system delivers a solution that removes paint and rust from corroded steel surfaces, without microplastics emissions. Inside the tools, grit hits the surface to be treated at high speed. The old paint and rust are then sucked back into the system by vacuum, and are kept in a closed loop and not released into the environment. The grit is recycled and reused 10 to 20 times. After treatment, the surface has a superior finish, and is ready for the new coating. In this way, Pinovo's circular system stops the contamination of the oceans with the paint microplastics from traditional open grit blasting and water jet blasting methods, specifically addressing the objectives of SDG14.1.

Implementation Stories

Pinovo - Clean Circular Blasting by Pinovo AS
Implemented by ProAccess Sweden AB in Härnösand (Sweden) in 2019

ProAccess Sweden AB is the maintenance contractor engaged by the local authorities for surface treatment (removal of old paint and rust before re-painting) of Högakustenbron Bridge in Sweden. They collaborated annually with Pinovo from 2019 during the summer maintenance period. Using rope access which eliminates the need for expensive and time consuming scaffolding rental and installation/removal, Pinovo’s patented PiCo Pipe tools were used for surface treatment of the painted steel cables on the bridge.

Result

From 2019 to 2021, estimates that 1,500kg of paint microplastics were recovered and safely disposed

03.

The environmental benefits

  • Prevents the emissions of paint micro plastics and blasting material into the environment (SDG14.1)
  • Up to 80% reduction in grit usage compared to open blasting systems resulting in CO2 emissions reduction from both blasting grit production & transportation (SDG 12.5)
  • Reduces the emission of paint microplastics into the environment from surface treatment to zero (SDG 12.4)
04.

The Financial benefits

  • Cost savings of up to 60% for customers doing spot blasting and using rope access
  • Recycling of grit 10 to 20 times reduces grit usage by up to 80%
