Description

Following the successful launch of Toile Ocean, the first book cover material made from recycled ocean plastic, Winter & Company is now expanding its sustainable range with Satin Ocean. Both materials are based on the same environmentally friendly principle: plastic waste from the sea is transformed into high-quality, long-lasting products, offering a sustainable alternative for luxury packaging solutions.

In collaboration with the Swiss company #tide ocean SA, plastic waste is collected from the oceans and coastal regions and processed into high-quality granulate using a mechanical process. This is then spun into yarn, which makes up 51% of Satin Ocean's material. Satin Ocean impresses with its smooth, silky gloss surface and is ideal for lining high-quality watch and jewelry boxes, display solutions and visual merchandising.

Impact & Result

Satin Ocean is made from over 50% recycled ocean plastic. To date, a total of over 4,100 kg of Ocean PET has been processed as a substitute for fossil based PET. The production process saves CO₂ and energy (#tide rPET has a CO2 footprint thats five times smaller than virgin PET), promotes fair working conditions through social sourcing, and supports drinking water projects by donating 1% of sales.

Solution Spotlight

The oceans are suffocating, up to 10 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year. Most of the plastic is coming from land due to a lack of waste management and because the material is often considered worthless. We want to change this perspective and give value to waste in two ways: First, through technology: In collaboration with the Swiss University of Applied Sciences we have developed a mechanical method to bring plastic waste back to life as a valuable material resource, fit to replace virgin plastic in many applications. Second, we create value through social and environmental impact. We offer additional income to local waste pickers and fishermen in Southeast Asia and Mexico to collect the plastic. The plastic gets sorted and cleaned in social enterprises where we create more jobs and offer additional support such as housing, social security, and health insurance. Environmental impact is created through clean-ups and prevention of further pollution.
