Description

PreZero Spain, specialising in urban services and circular economy solutions, has partnered with Waga Energy, a pioneer in biomethane production from landfill biogas, to create Spain’s largest project converting biogas from waste into renewable energy. Located on a 78-hectare site in Catalonia, the Can Mata plant can produce up to 70 GWh of biomethane annually by capturing gas from waste degradation. This is sufficient to power 14,000 households or fuel 200 trucks.

Impact & Result

After just one year of production, the WAGABOX® unit has successfully injected nearly 60 GWh of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) into the grid. In addition to this output, the unit has also prevented the emission of approximately 14,925 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

This project is the first of its kind in Spain; it converts biogas from a controlled landfill into renewable natural gas ready for injection into the gas grid to be used in homes, industries or vehicles. It will set an international precedent on how to move towards the circular economy.

Gonzalo Cañete, CEO at PreZero in Spain and Portugal

Solution Spotlight

The result of ten years of R&D at Air Liquide and Waga Energy, the WAGABOX® is a breakthrough landfill gas upgrading technology. It combines two upgrading processes: membrane filtration and cryogenic distillation. Membrane filtration removes the carbon dioxide (CO2) and impurities from landfill gas. The gas is then cryogenically cooled to separate the methane (CH4) from the oxygen (O2) and nitrogen (N2). WAGABOX® technology guarantees grid compliant biomethane regardless of air concentration in landfill gas. It adapts to raw gas flow rates and composition variations and delivers three times more energy than CHP, the most approaching competing technology. Biomethane can be transported and stored using existing gas infrastructure. The solution is fully integrated and is protected worldwide by six patent families.
