Schelfhout
Oostrum
For this project, Respyre and Schelfhout collaborated to produce prefab concrete panels coated with Respyre's bioreceptive concrete. These panels cover 450 m² of the office, creating a nearly fully green structure. After constructing the walls, the Respyre team applied a moss-gel by spraying the walls with moss spores. An integrated irrigation system watered the gel to initiate moss growth, which will take 12 weeks to fully develop. Once established, the moss becomes self-sustaining and requires no maintenance for survival. However, occasional watering during dry summers may be desirable for aesthetic purposes.
Moss offers numerous environmental benefits: it captures 0.5 kg of CO2 per square meter annually. For our 450 m² project with Schelfhout, this translates to 225 kg of CO2 removed from the atmosphere each year. Furthermore, moss is highly effective in mitigating the Urban Heat Island Effect. While the exact impact varies based on conditions, moss typically reduces a façade’s surface temperature by 10–15 degrees Celsius.
Experience the beauty of nature in your building with VertiScape. VertiScape plaster retrofits existing walls with a layer of bioreceptive concrete directly plastered onto existing walls. This specialised concrete acts as a perfect substrate for moss growth, fostering a vibrant and sustainable vertical landscape. By incorporating VertiScape plaster into your facade, you can transform existing walls into lush greenery, adding a touch of natural beauty, promoting biodiversity, and reducing heat stress in the building and neighborhood. That is why bioreceptive concrete represents an opportunity for renovating existing infrastructures in line with the urban standards of the future. It helps to reduce the heat island effect, assists with CO2 capture, and promotes new spaces for biodiversity in cities.
