Description

Migros, the Swiss retail giant, has successfully incorporated #tide ocean material® into its product packaging, introducing a "Fresh Ocean" edition of their Handy dish soap in a blue bottle made entirely from recycled ocean-bound plastic waste. Due to its initial success, Migros transitioned this limited edition into a permanent product, underscoring their commitment to sustainability. This move not only enhances the company's brand image but also exemplifies the positive environmental impact that businesses can achieve by integrating recycled materials, contributing to the global effort to reduce ocean plastic pollution and promote the circular economy.

Impact & Result

All these novel attributes did not go unnoticed: Migros’ brand-new Handy Fresh Ocean was proudly nominated for the highly coveted and prestigious Swiss Packaging Award 2023, celebrated for its groundbreaking and innovative features.

Solution Spotlight

The oceans are suffocating, up to 10 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year. Most of the plastic is coming from land due to a lack of waste management and because the material is often considered worthless. We want to change this perspective and give value to waste in two ways: First, through technology: In collaboration with the Swiss University of Applied Sciences we have developed a mechanical method to bring plastic waste back to life as a valuable material resource, fit to replace virgin plastic in many applications. Second, we create value through social and environmental impact. We offer additional income to local waste pickers and fishermen in Southeast Asia and Mexico to collect the plastic. The plastic gets sorted and cleaned in social enterprises where we create more jobs and offer additional support such as housing, social security, and health insurance. Environmental impact is created through clean-ups and prevention of further pollution.
