Description

The project was carried out in collaboration with Georgia Power, a leading U.S. company in electricity production and distribution. The project for integrating energy efficiency in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings was developed to minimize peak energy demands, primarily caused by heating and cooling systems during winter and summer. The high energy demand in short but frequent periods creates significant imbalances in power distribution networks. This forces energy producers to activate backup generators (from nuclear, gas, and coal plants) for short periods, leading to extremely high operational costs and increased atmospheric emissions, contributing to environmental pollution. As demonstrated in the next pages, the installation of TI-SKIN within the home's false ceiling allowed for temperature stabilization with minimal reliance on active climate control.

Impact & Result

In Atlanta, the TI-SKIN panels reduced air conditioning reliance by reflecting thermal energy from the roof and absorbing heat from the walls. The building maintained stable temperatures between 21°C and 27°C despite extreme weather. This passive solution cut electricity usage by over 50%, with a return on investment achieved in under two years. It provided significant savings and improved comfort while minimizing environmental impact, offering an effective alternative to traditional systems.

Solution Spotlight

Phase Change Materials (PCMs) are substances that absorb and release large amounts of thermal energy as they melt and freeze. When they melt, PCMs absorb thermal energy and utilize heat to undergo a phase change instead of increasing its temperature, storing latent thermal energy. In our panels, high-performance phase change materials (PCM) are incapsulated within a patented aluminum/ polymer film boasting high reflectivity and low emissivity. Our solution consists in a flexible, high thermal mass, reflective mat that absorbs and releases heat at specific predetermined temperatures. This solution helps maintain indoor temperatures and lowers energy use, which translates in cutting energy costs significantly. TI-Skin panels can be integrated in walls, floors and ceilings into pre-existent buildings or in new constructions; they are produced as mats, tiles or ready-to-apply panels coupled with plasterboard.
