Description

IBM wanted to pursue its ESG policy by reducing the carbon footprint of its semiconductor plant in Quebec, without burdening its finances. This ambitious energy efficiency and decarbonisation project required an investment of more than C$10 million. SOFIAC took charge of the entire investment, thus avoiding the need for IBM to invest its own capital, and then supervised all stages of the project to implement energy conservation and efficiency measures. Technical measures made possible by SOFIAC's investment: - Converting the steam network to hot water - Recovering waste heat - Replacing the gas boiler with an electric one - LED lighting - Solar thermal installation As SOFIAC's investment was repaid by part of the savings generated, it was crucial that the project should work and reduce the plant's energy consumption.

Impact & Result

The project to decarbonise the IBM plant in Bromont has made it possible to achieve the following objectives: - Over 70% reduction in GHG emissions, i.e. over 3,000 tCO2eq/year - 79% reduction in natural gas consumption SOFIAC's investment is being repaid by a portion of the energy savings generated over a 15-year period.

Solution Spotlight

SOFIAC has been designed to remove all the barriers - financial, technical and operational - to implementing decarbonisation projects. SOFIAC helps companies to reduce their energy costs and achieve ambitious GHG emission reduction targets without investing their own capital! The investment required for the decarbonisation project is borne by SOFIAC: it is repaid solely by the energy savings generated. In addition to the investment, SOFIAC offers full support throughout the project: preparation of the project with an energy audit if necessary, implementation of technical measures and performance monitoring. In addition to managing all stages of a project, we assume 100% of the financial and technical risks.
