Description

With pivotal support from The Ocean Foundation and substantial funding from the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund, our project was launched. Partnering with Club Med Miches, a leader in sustainability practices, and Fundacion Tropicalia, a dedicated supporter of local small farmers, we embarked on a collaborative journey. Guided by our biointensive farmer specialist and a local agronomist, we focused on launching the 'Little Gardener's House' Project, advancing sustainable sargassum harvesting techniques, optimizing composting methodologies using biochar, and pioneering innovative biological formulas. Our mission? To validate these technologies and achieve accreditation under the Gold Standard methodology for carbon credits, reaffirming our commitment to climate action and community support. We aspire to extend these solutions to coastal communities impacted by massive sargassum landings, ensuring they too benefit from sustainable practices and environmental resilience.

Impact & Result

During the project, we harvested 4,000 metric tons of sargassum and 4,000 metric tons of organic waste, producing around 5,000 metric tons of compost and sequestering 8,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalents. The compost was distributed to 15 farmers, improving crop yields and reducing fertilizer costs. Valued at $25 per metric ton, the compost generated total savings of approximately $125,000.

Solution Spotlight

The solution addresses the environmental challenges posed by massive sargassum accumulation in UNESCO biosphere reserves and private properties. Through coastal collection efforts in bays by boats, the solution preserves and restore mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrasses to their natural habitats. Central to this restoration is a patent-pending biological formula, which effectively absorbs toxic heavy metals and microplastics. To ensure eco-friendly collection on the beaches, electric vehicles are utilized and scalable carts, safeguarding sea turtle and bird nesting sites, and mitigating coastal erosion and noise pollution. Finally, employing scientific techniques, sargassum and local green waste are transformed into nutrient-rich compost, free of any trace of arsenic, revitalizing soil health, enhancing local crop yields, and minimizing landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
