Bupa - Cromwell Hospital
London
Bupa's Cromwell Hospital in South Kensington has become the first private hospital to adopt SageTech Medical’s solution for capturing and recycling waste volatile anaesthetics. In 2023, the hospital signed a five-year contract to install SageTech Medical’s device in ten operating theatres to prevent harmful anaesthetic gases from contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. SageTech Medical and Bupa’s journey started in 2022, when they were chosen as 1 of 6 global finalists for Bupa’s eco-Disruptive programme, which connects employees with sustainability start-ups.
By implementing SageTech Medical’s advanced technology, Cromwell Hospital is projected to achieve substantial environmental benefits, with an estimated annual reduction of 160 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions.
Clinicians are becoming more and more aware about the impact their clinical practice is having on the environment. Using SageTech Medical’s solution, we can help reduce the carbon footprint of anaesthesia and give patients a greener choice for their healthcare.
Mehnuhlik Lynch, Anaesthetic Team Leader & Theatre Projects - Transformation Lead at Cromwell Hospital
Volatile anaesthetic drugs are widely used with a global annual turnover of $1.3bn. The drugs are expensive to produce, in monetary and environmental terms. In practice, once exhaled by patients the drugs are vented to atmosphere. This is very damaging to the environment, contributing a huge 3.1 million tons of CO2 equivalents a year. SageTech’s solution prevents this atmospheric discharge, collects the exhaled drug, and re-purifies it, fit for human re-use. Drug metabolism is low, around 5%, so recovery yields are very high. The solution deploys a system of collection and purification that has sustainability at its core. Working with our pressure systems keeps instruments compact and no organic solvents are used in our process. SageTech’s solution offers large financial savings on hospital infrastructure installations and maintenance costs by eliminating the need for expensive air extraction systems to take the exhaled drugs from the operating theatres to the chimney.
