Tackling Sargassum with circular innovation at El Dorado Royale Resort

story image

Description

Grogenics launched its first large-scale Gold Standard project in Quintana Roo, Mexico, replicating its successful model from the Dominican Republic to combat the region’s escalating sargassum crisis. Massive sargassum blooms, surging 600% in the last decade, threaten marine biodiversity, coral reefs, and coastal ecosystems while releasing methane and toxic gases that accelerate climate change. In December 2024, Grogenics deployed its innovative solution at El Dorado Royale Resort, focusing on rapid sargassum collection before decomposition. The harvested biomass is then upcycled into biochar and organic fertilisers, using bioremediation to neutralise heavy metals. This circular economy approach not only protects coastal environments but also transforms waste into valuable resources, setting a scalable model for tackling sargassum across the region.

Impact & Result

Processing costs stayed under $100/tonne, making it landfill-competitive. Generated 3,000 tonnes of compost in five months, cutting reliance on imported fertilizers. Near-resort model integrates with hotel waste systems, reducing costs and enhancing sustainability branding. Diverted sargassum from beaches and landfills, avoiding ~3,000 tonnes of CO₂. Employed 12–15 locals year-round, with added jobs during peak blooms.

The results are incredible – flowers and vegetables have never been this big. Grogenics compost is 100% effective!”

Tony de la Rosa, Gardener for Oscar de la Renta, Punta Cana, D.R.

Solution Spotlight

The solution addresses the environmental challenges posed by massive sargassum accumulation in UNESCO biosphere reserves and private properties. Through coastal collection efforts in bays by boats, the solution preserves and restore mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrasses to their natural habitats. Central to this restoration is a patent-pending biological formula, which effectively absorbs toxic heavy metals and microplastics. To ensure eco-friendly collection on the beaches, electric vehicles are utilized and scalable carts, safeguarding sea turtle and bird nesting sites, and mitigating coastal erosion and noise pollution. Finally, employing scientific techniques, sargassum and local green waste are transformed into nutrient-rich compost, free of any trace of arsenic, revitalizing soil health, enhancing local crop yields, and minimizing landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
