Description

In August 2023, K-Ren deployed its floating hull protection system on a FREMM (multi-mission frigate) in Toulon for a one-month test. The system, designed to block light and prevent photosynthesis, was installed without antifouling paints or chemicals. Despite the high sea temperatures at this time of year, which usually accelerate fouling development, the protected hull showed a noticeable reduction in marine growth compared to untreated areas. The results were confirmed through an official technical analysis, currently confidential. This test, conducted with the French Navy, demonstrates the potential of our solution for large military and industrial vessels requiring non-invasive, effective antifouling alternatives.

Impact & Result

The FREMM frigate, equipped for one month, avoided toxic antifouling paints, heavy-metal and microplastic discharges, and reduced freshwater usage for cleaning. A cleaner hull lowers fuel consumption (up to 20%) and CO₂ emissions. For such large vessels, the return on investment is immediate, given the high costs and mandatory nature of dry-dock maintenance.

Solution Spotlight

The K-REN hull cover, manufactured in France from recyclable technical fabrics, blocks out light and prevents the growth of marine organisms, thereby avoiding the release of heavy metals and biocides into the environment. Easy to install and suitable for all types of vessels, it reduces the need for frequent hull maintenance while preserving biodiversity and nautical performance. Committed to local and responsible production, we collaborate with regional partners and constantly verify the safety of our materials. K-Ren provides a concrete alternative to traditional hull cleaning, combining performance, sustainability, and respect for the oceans to support the ecological transition of the maritime sector.
