DB Deutsche Bahn / DB German Railways
Berlin
NET Materials®, developed by carbonauten, has been integrated into DB Deutsche Bahn's operations through the DB mindbox program in Berlin. This collaboration with DB Cargo AG and DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung (FZI) resulted in a 100-day Proof of Concept (PoC) that converts biological waste into biochar, a CO2 sink. Three main actions were undertaken: converting waste to biochar, developing CO2 certificates, and incorporating biocarbon into CO2 negative products. The joint PoC with carbonauten enables DB Cargo and DB FZI to provide a simpler and more sustainable disposal route for biological waste and at the same time to use CO2 negative products.
A single tonne of biochar can sequester up to 3.3 tons of CO2 indefinitely. This initiative enhances waste management, lowers carbon emissions, and fosters the development of eco-friendly products, showcasing a powerful example of cleantech collaboration for advancing sustainability.
carbonauten develops products based on biocarbons. These biocarbons bind and store up to 3.7 tons of CO2 per ton of biocarbon. carbonauten has a highly efficient and industrial carbonization technology that enables us to create a new category of materials: NET Materials® (Negative Emission Materials), which are CO2-negative products for the plastics and agricultural industries. carbonauten will be able to offer these materials in large quantities at low prices to make decarbonization affordable for the industry. This will help the industry to reduce CO2 emissions in the order of several gigatons, especially in sector 3, at low cost.
