The City of Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro
The years 2023 and 2024 have been especially challenging for Rio de Janeiro due to extreme climate conditions. In March 2024, the heat index soared to 62°C, causing intense heatwaves and a surge in medical assistance requests as residents struggled with the heat. Despite ongoing efforts like hydration points, green corridors, and preventive measures in vulnerable areas, it became clear that a stronger response was needed. For 40 years, the ReflorestaRio Program has been key in combating climate change in the region, but the current crisis demands faster action. In response, Rio has launched an innovative reforestation initiative in partnership with MORFO, a French-Brazilian green tech company. Using drones and AI, the city plans to reforest 60 hectares in Serra de Inhoaíba, Campo Grande, an area crucial for expanding Rio’s green cover and addressing the climate crisis.
The project will restore an initial 60 hectares of critical land in the coming months, focusing on areas with the highest ecological impact. Utilizing cutting-edge technology, the reforestation process is 100 times faster than traditional methods, dramatically accelerating environmental recovery efforts.
MORFO offers reforestation services blending agritech, machine-learning, and computer vision to fight global warming. We are an A-Z solution for large-scale reforestation, from area analysis, to species selection & encapsulation, to high-rate plantation and ecological monitoring. We plant forests on degraded lands in tropical and sub-tropical regions and restore entire ecosystems by optimising our techniques for biodiversity and socio-economic impact. For each project, MORFO closely monitors the planted areas and continuously analyses biodiversity and biomass developments, as well as carbon capture levels. All data is displayed on an online dashboard accessible by all parties involved.
