Description

In 2024, Aqualia implemented a sustainable energy solution at its water treatment plant by installing two pumps that operate as turbines (PAT). These turbines use the flow and pressure from incoming water—1700 m³/hour at 2 bar—to generate 70 kW of clean energy. The system is also monitored in real time, ensuring its continuous optimization for both performance and efficiency. This innovative move not only reduces operational costs but also enhances the facility's environmental sustainability.

Impact & Result

The energy generated is used for self-consumption, resulting in a 35% reduction in electricity costs for the plant. By installing two pumps functioning as turbines (PAT) at Aqualia's water treatment plant, electricity costs have decreased by 35%, with the investment expected to pay for itself in just four years.

Solution Spotlight

The turbines can reach up to 25kw and they can be installed at any point of the water network as long as there are a circulating flow and pressure available. The generated energy can be used for self-consumption in any nearby installation (pumping station, treatment plant, etc) or directly sold to a local or national grid. The crew behind this solution will help users to evaluate the energy potential, calculate the economic payback and give support during the installation process including, if necessary, a commissioning service on the field for first start-up of the system. This solution offers grid-tied and off-grid solutions based on battery charging turbines. Thanks to this technology, it is now possible to generate energy with a turbine instead of wasting it in heat and noise in a valve.
