Description

"Lungs of the City" is a solution designed to enhance urban air quality through active treatment technology seamlessly integrated into the city’s infrastructure. This smart system actively purifies the air, addressing both local emissions and background pollution levels. A wealth of scientific studies and case examples has driven the broader adoption of this solution, particularly in Brussels' underground parking facilities by the Interparking Group. These "Poumons," as Interparking has aptly named them, not only improve air quality inside the parking garages but also benefit the surrounding areas. In the coming year, Interparking plans to transform three more parking facilities in Brussels into "Lungs," further expanding its impact and supporting the city’s clean air objectives.

Impact & Result

Every year, 2.3 billion cubic meters of air are treated across four underground parking facilities in central Brussels, equivalent to 4.7 trillion breaths. This system captures nearly 50 kilograms of particulate matter from the air, preventing it from being inhaled and reducing potential health risks. The solution results in a 25% reduction in air quality-related health risks in nearby areas, leading to significant socio-economic benefits when implemented on a larger scale. Additionally, it uses 80% less energy compared to traditional air purification technologies.

Solution Spotlight

The Lungs of the City provides a validated solution to substantially improve urban air quality, aiming at particulate matter removal at exposure hotspot locations. The solution is based on a proven air treatment technology, combined with an scientifically validated application strategy and a vast amount of practical experience. Therefore it brings a meaningful addition to existing policies to improve urban air quality. With the Lungs of the City approach, buildings, objects and infrastructure are smartly and efficiently transformed into net air purifiers to bring relief at exposure hotspot and actively reducing health risk. With the Lungs of the City, an important instrument has been added to the toolkit for increasing urban sustainability and improvement of the living environment.
