Description

The City of Eindhoven in the Netherlands launched a range of air quality measures to reach 50% health gains for its residents. In collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology, Air Liquide and ENS Clean AirIn, the Lungs of the City project, transformed the city center into a “Living Lab” for research into large-scale implementation of air purification technology in the public environment. Throughout the project, high-resolution computer models were developed with which the effects of air purification interventions can be virtually determined.

Impact & Result

  • The project aimed for a 50% improvement in residents' health, with projections showing that health risks could be reduced by 0.5 to 1.5 percentage points. This improvement in air quality is particularly beneficial for vulnerable populations, including children, elderly people, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
  • The use of virtual modelling allowed for cost-effective strategies to reduce health risks, with the potential to optimize interventions and minimize expenses while still achieving significant improvements in public health.
