Izeda’s Fire Brigade
Bragança
The main objectives for this project were to reduce the Izeda Fire Brigade's high energy costs, increase its independence from the electrical grid, and lower the local community's environmental footprint. The initiative was also designed to help address energy poverty in the region.
To meet these goals, a 30 kWp photovoltaic plant was installed and a new Renewable Energy Community (REC) was established. Cleanwatts managed the project through all phases, from planning to installation. The ongoing operation and management of the community's shared energy is handled by the Cleanwatts OS.
The project delivers significant results, achieving 33% energy autonomy for the REC and preventing 10.8 tons of CO2 emissions annually. This led to a 20.5% cost reduction for the Fire Brigade. Of the energy produced, 37% is self-consumed while the remaining 63% surplus is shared with the community. The community supports about 50 local people and businesses.
The solution aims to deliver economic, social and environmental benefits to end-users, while also empowering the active participation of citizens in the energy markets. The solution is a modular, interoperable and localized cloud-based Operating System designed to manage energy communities around the world, managing the energy flows and trades, as well as distributed energy assets to increase collective self-consumption, provides aggregation of flexible assets for balancing markets participation, and it can also aggregate generation to participate in Energy Markets. End-users (residential or C&I) are provided with apps to monitor and manage energy flows and transactions. The solution seamlessly connects the dots between behind-the-meter optimization for community members and front-of-the-meter grid resiliency and transaction management for local energy markets. It is promoting the energy transition in a decentralized, digitalized and democratized way.
