Description

In Bern, Switzerland, Gangloff Immobilien AG has integrated the Joulia-Inline and Joulia-Twinline cleantech solutions into the Gangloff Areal Bern residential complex. The project, comprising three interconnected segments and financed by the pension fund of the Canton of Bern, was executed by PORR Suisse AG with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. A key feature is the installation of 178 Joulia-Twinline shower drain channels in each bathroom, which recover waste heat from shower water to reduce energy consumption. This innovation lowers utility bills, reduces carbon footprints, and sets a precedent for future sustainable urban developments.

Impact & Result

Taking into account the number of residents and the standard use of a shower, the energy savings in this building complex are 1,835 kWh per Joulia-Twinline system, resulting in an impressive total of 326,630 kWh across the entire complex.

Solution Spotlight

Reclaim valuable heat energy from used shower water by pre-warming the fresh water before it arrives at the mixer. The shower drain Joulia has to be connected to the freshwater. By means of a heat exchanger module, the heat energy of the used shower water is reused to warm the incoming cold water mains. In this way, the cold water arrives at the mixing valve up to 20°C warmer than before (from 10°C up to 30°C). Therefore, substantially less hot water is needed. Joulia-Inline is sold with either 3 or 5 heat exchanger tubes, and Joulia-Twinline with 6 or 10 which you can select depending on whether maximum efficiency or minimal installation height is more important.
