Fundación Terra
Francisco Morazán
In alliance with Terra Foundation, we have created a unique reforestation model in the country through the use of cutting-edge technology, where biotechnology is applied to reforestation processes. This project began with a pilot phase to test the development of intelligent seeds (iSeeds) of certain native forest species for their application and adaptation in Honduran forests. They are dispersed by drones with wet or dry seed distributors, depending on the case. Subsequently, the second phase consists of carrying out field sowings of the smart seeds, including the experimental design, execution and data collection of the plots to be sown. The initial project is reforesting 60 hectares in south-central Honduras with smart seeds of Pine, Oak, Liquidambar and Macuelizo. These seeds have been launched in the central zone of the country in Leonesa, El Hatillo, Carpinteros and Comayagua and in the southern zone, San José de la Landa in Choluteca.
The Smart Seed project captures tons of CO2 through large-scale planting, helping to mitigate climate change and improve air quality. Advanced seed dispersal technology optimizes energy use, with drones consuming less energy than traditional heavy machinery. Economically, the project also reduces operational and labor costs compared to traditional reforestation methods.
Our iSeed consists of a biodegradable capsule that contains components that help to retain and absorb rainwater, favouring a higher germination rate and providing natural elements that act as deterrents to predation. By means of this technique, we manage to act in areas that are difficult to access due to the orographic conditions, managing to repopulate large areas. Our drones are equipped with a seed tank to which a dispenser specifically designed for this type of drone is attached. The seeding process begins with the prior planning of the flight route, which is established according to the terrain where we are going to act. Using this method, we can distribute the seeds strategically along the route, ensuring optimum coverage and maximum efficiency in terms of time and cost.
