story image

Description

Peel Region, serving 1.44M residents with 2,900 miles of watermains, was looking for a smarter way to manage aging infrastructure. Cann Forecast’s InteliPipes AI solution analyzed structural, operational, and environmental data to predict failures. The model’s effectiveness was successfully validated against true breaks: the top 1% most at-risk pipes identified by InteliPipes in 2023 was responsible for 40% of the 2024 breaks in Mississauga, representing a 230% improvement over traditional methods. By moving from reactive, age-based replacement to proactive, data-driven planning, Peel improved resilience, reduced costs, and advanced sustainable water management. “Cann Forecast delivered big time and helped us accurately forecast watermain cohorts that we should be proactively targeting… improving the level of service to our customers.” – Imran Motala, P.Eng, Manager of Water Wastewater Asset Management, Peel Region

Impact & Result

Cost Savings: - The top 1% watermains most at-risk according to InteliPipes were responsible for 40% of the total yearly breaks of the City of Mississauga in 2024 - On average, more than $400,000 in direct repair costs could potentially be avoided thanks to the solution. Water & Energy Conservation: - Compared to replacing the oldest pipes first, InteliPipes was able to proactively detect 33 additional breaks, potentially saving 950,000 m³ of water per year.

Cann Forecast delivered big time and helped us accurately forecast watermain cohorts that we should be proactively targeting… improving the level of service to our customers.

Solution Spotlight

In many cities around the world, drinking water and wastewater infrastructure was built between the 1940s and 1970s, meaning that a significant percentage of these assets is close to or has already reached the end of its useful life. Water infrastructures are crumbling and in need of replacement and repair, especially today with climate change causing significant temperature and drought variations, putting additional strain on these infrastructures. CANN forecast developed InteliPipes, a tool which enables the identification of vulnerable pipes within a city's water distribution system in order to make proactive decisions concerning the rehabilitation of water main pipes. These tools were developed using artificial intelligence models that rely on available data to provide useful insights to decision makers to help municipalities decide which water main pipes should be replaced in order to limit water loss.
