Description

HORL is a German family-owned company manufacturing rolling knife sharpeners. The owners came up with the design of their product a little less than 10 years ago and has since taken over the world of professional chefs and ambitious homecooks. In 2024, HORL decided to try something new: Instead of wood, they used #tide ocean material© (recycled ocean-bound polypropylene) for the entry level Horl3 Cruise knife sharpener. The Cruise is meant as a cost efficient product to open up new markets. With the revamped product and material there came whole new possibilities for marketing and the Horl3 Cruise is a huge success.

Impact & Result

Using #tide Ocean Material, HORL launched the more affordable HORL®3 Cruise, tripling sales over the previous model. The first batch repurposed 15,000 kg of ocean-bound plastic into polypropylene with 50% lower CO₂ emissions, verified by Carbotech and MyClimate. Waste collection in Southeast Asia and Central America supports local livelihoods, while processing by social enterprises in Thailand empowers ethnic minority communities.

By using #tide Ocean Material, HORL was able to offer its innovative rolling knife sharpener with the HORL®3 Cruise to a wider audience at a more affordable price. In conjunction with an optimisation of features and more intensive marketing, sales figures have tripled compared to the previous model HORL®2 Cruise.”

Julian Ruf, R&D Director at HORL

Solution Spotlight

The oceans are suffocating, up to 10 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year. Most of the plastic is coming from land due to a lack of waste management and because the material is often considered worthless. We want to change this perspective and give value to waste in two ways: First, through technology: In collaboration with the Swiss University of Applied Sciences we have developed a mechanical method to bring plastic waste back to life as a valuable material resource, fit to replace virgin plastic in many applications. Second, we create value through social and environmental impact. We offer additional income to local waste pickers and fishermen in Southeast Asia and Mexico to collect the plastic. The plastic gets sorted and cleaned in social enterprises where we create more jobs and offer additional support such as housing, social security, and health insurance. Environmental impact is created through clean-ups and prevention of further pollution.
