In November 2022, Hivenet and Inria entered into a strategic four-year partnership to develop a sovereign, peer-to-peer cloud infrastructure aimed at ensuring the emergence of a sovereign cloud. This collaboration leverages the expertise of Inria’s project teams and Hivenet's innovative distributed cloud technology to tackle several technological challenges associated with decentralized cloud systems: viable data placement and repair, management of mutable data, investigation of new techniques to handle"Sybil attacks" and "Byzantine failures", development of a data security mechanism. The project brings together the skills of four Inria project-team specializing in trusted collaborative applications, autonomous distributed systems, and distributed system design. This partnership is set to accelerate Hivenet's development timeline, enabling the release of a competitive and sustainable cloud solution by 2024.
The distributed nature of Hivenet's cloud infrastructure reduces energy consumption significantly compared to centralized data centers. Hivenet's solution offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional cloud services. By utilizing existing hardware and optimizing resource use, the partnership aims to provide affordable and scalable cloud solutions. This reduces the need for expensive new hardware investments, offering savings to both individual users and businesses.
Hivenet offers two main services: - Store with Hivenet: A secure and sustainable storage solution that leverages the community's unused drive space. - Compute with Hivenet: A service that aggregates network computing resources to efficiently handle workloads such as Generative AI, LLM training, video processing, and 3D modeling. Together, these offer a greener, more resilient, and cost-effective alternative to traditional centralized cloud providers.
