Helios Exchange Adopted by New York City for Digital Energy Twin Modeling and Decarbonization

Description

The project, started in 2019, aimed to model the entire building stock of New York City as an open-source project. For each of the 54,000 buildings simulated, Helios has used the city energy disclosure data, and created a digital energy twin to simulate the energy savings and decarbonization potential for 3 levels of energy retrofit scenarios from low-cost retrofit (payback of less than 2.5 years), to deep retrofit (payback of less than 15 years). The estimated aggregate savings ranges from 7.9% to 52.7% per year.

Impact & Result

- Avoided between 1,406,700 and 4,202,700 metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions annually.
- Increased operational efficiency by 20%, leading to substantial cost savings.
- Enhanced sustainability metrics company-wide, contributing to improved corporate social responsibility performance.

Solution Spotlight

The platform uses artificial intelligence and advanced energy retrofit simulation & algorithms to manage the entire energy retrofit cycle: origination, building energy performance assessment, project development, remote audits, project financing and insurance, implementation and monitoring. The Helios technology typically reduces project transaction costs and execution timeline by a factor of 3 and thus is particularly well suited for small and medium commercial buildings. The HELIOS-EEX platform also provides a SaaS based suite of building energy analytics, remote audits and other retrofit simulation tools designed for project developers and energy service professionals (ESPs).
