Description

We have created Station 16-1546: a research station that collects, transmits and analyses reef data. Designed and developed by our coalition of partners led by Orange Business, Station 16-1546 is equipped with an underwater camera taking pictures every 30 seconds. An autonomous buoy powered by solar energy transfers the images via the 4G cellular network. Taking up to 6,000 photos a day, the data is analyzed by a machine learning algorithm for species recognition. It brings major benefits to coral reefs: monitoring marine biodiversity and new knowledge about marine ecosystems. The station was tested on one of our restored reefs in Malaysia in September 2024, with the support of our partners in the field, and it works!

Impact & Result

Enables precise monitoring of marine biodiversity, providing detailed insights into coral ecosystems. Minimizes human disturbance while increasing data collection efficiency. Uses Tēnaka Science to present data visually, raising awareness and engaging stakeholders in conservation. Frees divers to focus on reef restoration and biodiversity initiatives.

Solution Spotlight

With its CSR advisory board, this solution aims to help businesses integrate sustainable practices at the very heart of their business model, bridging the gap between economic profitability and positive impacts for our planet. Through its program, this solution restores degraded marine ecosystems alongside local scientists, NGOs and communities. Thanks to the development of coral nurseries, Tenaka is able to restore the resilience of marine habitats and secure the benefits they provide for coastal communities, following the model of 'nature-based solutions'. Tenaka's solution provides businesses with economic incentives to engage their customers, scientific impact measurement tools accessible online on the Tenaka Science Platform, brand contents for CSR reports, drive-to-store mechanisms, and many more. Highly versatile, Tenaka's solution can be customized to answer the need of any small, medium or large enterprise willing to have an impact.
