e.systeme21
Ulm
e.systeme21 GmbH, based in Ulm, Germany, has achieved complete climate neutrality and energy self-sufficiency for its commercial property. Over 18 months, the company implemented an energy retrofit, including rooftop photovoltaics, battery storage, heat pumps, and intelligent energy management. A key innovation is the H2 battery, developed by OHS, which uses excess solar energy to produce hydrogen for seasonal storage. In winter, this hydrogen is converted into electricity and heat. The project supports regional sustainability by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and creating local jobs. e.systeme21 also serves as a pilot for the "Donautal Connect – Climate-Neutral Business Park" initiative, collaborating with Aalen University and the University of Ulm to explore future climate-neutral solutions for the region. This project sets a model for other businesses, proving that climate neutrality and economic success can coexist.
Over the next 20 years, energy costs for electricity and heat will average 25 cents per kilowatt hour, year-round. The installation of the H2 battery, which stores excess solar power as hydrogen in summer, has helped reduce CO2 emissions to zero starting in 2024. This measure cut emissions from 41 tons in 2022 and 53 tons in 2023 to zero, avoiding nearly 100 tons of CO2 emissions from 2022 and 2023 from 2024 onwards.
The H2-Battery is a comprehensive energy solution that enables complete energy independence all year round. It integrates hydrogen-based components, including modular electrolysis, a fuel cell, a compressor and a hydrogen storage system, to create a fully autonomous energy system. The-H2 Battery complements existing building energy supply components such as heat pumps and electric batteries with these hydrogen components and is ideal for property owners (private persons as well as SMEs or public institutions) with renewable energy sources that generate at least 1.6 times more energy than they consume.
