story image

Description

GreenIron has successfully processed 10 tonnes of Vale’s pelletized virgin iron ore using its full-scale hydrogen-based reduction furnace, enabling fossil-free metal production. This use case was implemented to address the steel and mining industries’ urgent need to reduce carbon emission. Traditionally, iron ore is reduced using coal or coke, a highly carbon-intensive process. GreenIron’s patented technology replaces fossil carbon with hydrogen, eliminating CO₂ emissions at the source. Executed as a pilot project in partnership with Vale, the initiative demonstrates both technical viability and scalability of the solution. It also highlights the potential for long-term cost savings through reduced carbon pricing and improved alignment with global climate and ESG goals. This milestone represents a concrete step toward fossil-free, sustainable metal production.

Impact & Result

GreenIron’s patented hydrogen-based process replaces coal in iron ore reduction, eliminating up to 2 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of ore.
In a pilot with Vale, 10 tonnes of ore are processed, avoiding 20 tonnes of CO₂. The steel industry accounts for 7–9% of global CO₂, and mining 4–7%. This scalable solution cuts emissions at the source, boosts efficiency, reduces carbon costs, and supports ESG and climate goals.

Solution Spotlight

GreenIron has a process to address a global market and efforts to lower the GHG output of metal production from Q3 2023. The outputs of the GreenIron process are valuable commodities extracted from magnetite, hematite, other metal oxides, minerals, waste, and residual products from the steel, mining, foundry, and manufacturing industries. The process is completely CO2 free, the only emissions from the process are water and metals. The solution can make a difference in the industry today as it works in batches, which enables modular and scalable operations close to the sources and our customers.
