Description

Orange Business is funding a five-year coral reef restoration program with Tēnaka, restoring 1.500m² of coral reefs as part of its environmental commitment. This initiative also actively engages employees through a network of ambassadors. To accelerate conservation, Tēnaka developed Station 16-1546, an AI-powered underwater monitoring station named after the Pantone color "Living Coral". Recognizing its potential, Orange supports its development and giving Tēnaka the benefits of its technological expertise to develop the species recognition algorithm, transmit and exploit the data collected on the reef. The first prototype was successfully tested on Orange’s restored reef in 2024, and thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, two new stations will be deployed in 2025. By automatizing biodiversity monitoring, the station frees up divers’ time while AI provides accurate insights on ecosystem health and the impact of restoration efforts.

Impact & Result

Reefs support millions of species, protect coastlines from erosion and storms, and serve as vital nurseries for fish and crustaceans. In Malaysia, they also provide nesting sites for species like the hawksbill turtle and serve as key stopovers along migratory routes, such as those of whale sharks. We are restoring 5,000 m² of coral reefs to protect marine biodiversity and enhance coastal resilience.
