Orange Business is funding a five-year coral reef restoration program with Tēnaka, restoring 1.500m² of coral reefs as part of its environmental commitment. This initiative also actively engages employees through a network of ambassadors. To accelerate conservation, Tēnaka developed Station 16-1546, an AI-powered underwater monitoring station named after the Pantone color "Living Coral". Recognizing its potential, Orange supports its development and giving Tēnaka the benefits of its technological expertise to develop the species recognition algorithm, transmit and exploit the data collected on the reef. The first prototype was successfully tested on Orange’s restored reef in 2024, and thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, two new stations will be deployed in 2025. By automatizing biodiversity monitoring, the station frees up divers’ time while AI provides accurate insights on ecosystem health and the impact of restoration efforts.
Reefs support millions of species, protect coastlines from erosion and storms, and serve as vital nurseries for fish and crustaceans. In Malaysia, they also provide nesting sites for species like the hawksbill turtle and serve as key stopovers along migratory routes, such as those of whale sharks. We are restoring 5,000 m² of coral reefs to protect marine biodiversity and enhance coastal resilience.
With its CSR advisory board, this solution aims to help businesses integrate sustainable practices at the very heart of their business model, bridging the gap between economic profitability and positive impacts for our planet. Through its program, this solution restores degraded marine ecosystems alongside local scientists, NGOs and communities. Thanks to the development of coral nurseries, Tenaka is able to restore the resilience of marine habitats and secure the benefits they provide for coastal communities, following the model of 'nature-based solutions'. Tenaka's solution provides businesses with economic incentives to engage their customers, scientific impact measurement tools accessible online on the Tenaka Science Platform, brand contents for CSR reports, drive-to-store mechanisms, and many more.
