Description

Sou Fujimoto Architects designed SQUARE as a versatile, grid-based structure of interconnected cubes totaling 7,000 m². It features adaptable layouts, green rooftop terraces, and transparent indoor-outdoor spaces. Sustainability was a key focus, with innovative solutions such as hollow concrete ceilings that reduce material use by 17% and improve seismic resilience. The HSG Foundation partnered with Holcim Switzerland to use 3,000 m³ of ECOPact+, a CO2-reduced concrete incorporating Susteno—Europe's first cement made with 20% recycled demolition materials—and local recycled aggregates, emphasizing circular economy principles. Materials were sourced from a nearby plant to minimize transportation emissions, setting a new standard in sustainable construction.

Impact & Result

Holcim's research has demonstrated that the fine fraction of construction waste can be effectively used in cement production, influencing Swiss and European standards for resource-efficient materials. Susteno, Switzerland's first cement made with recycled demolition waste, conserves resources, reduces emissions, and minimizes landfill use by closing the material cycle. Additionally, innovative hollow core ceiling systems cut material usage by around 20%.

Solution Spotlight

ECOPact range is the industry’s broadest offering of green concrete for sustainable and low carbon construction. The product is sold at a range of low-carbon levels from 30%-100% lower embedded carbon compared to standard (CEM I) concrete. The global brand ECOPact aims to make carbon-reduced construction available in all core markets where Holcim is present. The entry-level product is ECOPact, with 30-50% lower embodied carbon content compared to a mix design with CEM I. ECOPactPRIME has a CO2 reduction level between 50-70%. The product is technically more demanding providing a significantly higher reduction than the general standard available in a given market. ECOPactMAX exploits the technical possibilities to the maximum. This product pushes Holcim technical expertise to offer a top of the line product with a CO2 reduction greater than 70%. ECOPactZERO is a unique or carbon-neutral concrete, achieved through offsetting.
