The Port of Los Angeles
Los Angeles
Eco Wave Power, a leader in wave energy conversion, has partnered with AltaSea for a demonstration project at the Port of Los Angeles. This marks a key expansion from its success in Gibraltar, where it integrated with the utility grid for six years. The project aims to produce sustainable energy in one of the busiest maritime hubs by harnessing ocean wave kinetic energy, converting it into clean electricity to reduce fossil fuel dependency and minimize the port's carbon footprint. This initiative aligns with Los Angeles's sustainability goals and showcases the economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy in urban coastal settings, offering a scalable model for other port cities.
The innovative technology known as Eco Wave Power had the potential to generate approximately 15 megawatts of clean, renewable electricity by harnessing the energy of ocean waves. This amount of power is significant, as it could supply enough electricity to meet the needs of 15,000 average households.
Comprised of floaters submerged in the ocean/sea attached to structures such as piers and jetties, Eco Wave Power uses specially designed floaters use buoyancy force, changes in water level and flow, the ‘airlock’ effect, and the vertical movement of waves, to create an efficient energy conversion process. This system serves communities that have less heavy energy requirements and do not have the means for a cumbersome system that could be found further offshore. As such, the capital expenditure requirements are vastly reduced – about 1 million USD per Megawatt installed.
