Description

In collaboration with the Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA), Desolenator has launched the world’s first solar thermal installation for net-zero sustainable desalination. This project highlights the power of partnerships in addressing global challenges. With the goal of combating the water and climate crisis, Desolenator’s pilot desalination plant, located at the Jebel Ali Power Plant, produces at least 1,000 liters of potable water per day. The initiative is part of DEWA's involvement in the Dubai Future Accelerators (DFA) program, the largest accelerator initiative globally.

Impact & Result

The innovative design aims to be fully reliant on solar energy, with the ambitious goal of achieving a target Levelized Cost of potable water production of less than US$0.02 per liter, making it both highly sustainable and cost-effective.

Solution Spotlight

Today industrial desalination uses 0.4% of the global annual electricity and is on track to be responsible for 5% of global carbon emissions by 2040. Addressing this challenge, Desolenator uses no membranes, chemicals or polluting diesel, unlike traditional technologies. Instead, the patented technology uses the planets most abundant resource – the sun. By harvesting thermal and electrical energy from an integrated PVT panel, Desolenator produces high-quality water, monitored via a control panel. This solution eliminates external energy requirements, aiming to provide drinking water for all at low cost and with low environmental impact.
