Diade is an upholstery textile which explores the colour universe of artist Kapwani Kiwanga. It is woven from #tide's recycled polyester made from 100% ocean-bound plastic waste. Diade is the Italian word for something that consists of two parts, referring to the duality in the design of the textile. Inspired by the iridescence of colours in nature, and the way they appear or disappear depending on the angle at which one observes them, the surface reveals two different expressions of pattern. Diade showcases the potential of recycled polyester textiles made from ocean-bound plastic waste. It offers a rich, matte quality, the same level of performance as virgin polyester, and is recyclable.
Cradle-to-gate emission reduction between virgin and recycled polyester in our Kvadrat Weaving EPDs: 21%.
Scenario to illustrate yearly savings: “Patio Outdoor” virgin polyester from Kvadrat Weaving, with a cradle to gate EPD value of 10,7 kgCO2e/kg textile, and sold weight in 2024 of 17.529 kg. If we take a scenario where we would sell the recycled polyester “Diade” instead of above, we would save 39.264 kg of CO2e (39 tons CO2e).
To be involved in developing a product which is future leaning, was inspiring. In working with ocean-bound plastic waste, we were able to approach a difficult reality with creativity, colour and ingenuity, to inspire alternative choices.
Kapwani Kiwanga, Canadian artist
The oceans are suffocating, up to 10 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year. Most of the plastic is coming from land due to a lack of waste management and because the material is often considered worthless. We want to change this perspective and give value to waste in two ways: First, through technology: In collaboration with the Swiss University of Applied Sciences we have developed a mechanical method to bring plastic waste back to life as a valuable material resource, fit to replace virgin plastic in many applications. Second, we create value through social and environmental impact. We offer additional income to local waste pickers and fishermen in Southeast Asia and Mexico to collect the plastic. The plastic gets sorted and cleaned in social enterprises where we create more jobs and offer additional support such as housing, social security, and health insurance. Environmental impact is created through clean-ups and prevention of further pollution.
