Description

The Drin in Albania is one of the most polluted rivers in Europe. Due to its special location and the fact that it borders several countries, both the white and the black Drin carry huge amounts of plastic waste into the Adriatic Sea. Our local partner (adopter) is Recycling Albania. The CEO is Lulzim Baumann. Together we are implementing the technology in Albania as there is no alternative yet. With our labelled solution CollectiX, a highly efficient, AI supported waste collection boat, we want to solve this challenge in the long term. The boat is operating and collecting on the river since the end of May. We also have the world's first mobile waste sorting container on site to simplify the logistics of the collected material and recycle as much plastic as possible.

Impact & Result

Since late May, over 50 boatloads of waste, primarily PET plastic, have been removed and sorted. By June 13th, more than 5 tons of PET were recycled locally, with a total of 50 tons of mixed waste collected. The project has created six local jobs, and the city of Kukës and the government are involved both financially and in content. The goal is to establish a permanent waste collection system, including a barrier, in the coming months.

Solution Spotlight

Eleven million tons of plastic waste are discharged into the oceans every year, a large part of it via rivers. To tackle this challenge, everwave, Berky and DFKI cooperated to create the “CollectiX”, an innovative solution to clean water bodies and protect the environment. With approx. 20 tons of garbage collection per day, a single boat ensures optimal water purification. A drone supports each garbage boat and identifies the waste hotspots. In addition, the boat is equipped with sensors which, thanks to artificial intelligence, help to analyse the waste smartly. In this way, not only collect garbage is collected, but also detailed data on its composition. The solution helps to maintain rivers, lakes, canals and harbours clean all over the world.
