Citeo
Longlaville
The consortium of Carbios, Wellman, and Valorplast has launched a transformative PET recycling project in Longlaville, France, in collaboration with Citeo. Awarded 30% of the tonnages proposed by Citeo, the project targets single-layer and multilayer PET trays, highlighting innovative cleantech solutions. Starting in 2023, Wellman will manage the separation and mechanical recycling of single-layer PET trays into new food packaging. From 2025, Carbios will oversee multilayer PET recycling with their advanced biorecycling plant, using proprietary enzyme technology to convert PET into high-quality, food-grade PET. This nine-year contract enhances recycling efficiency, sustainability, and environmental stewardship, setting a model for global replication.
As a result of Citeo's call for tender, 108,000 tons of plastic packaging will be recycled by 2025. The initiative will also lead to the construction of four new recycling units in France and the consolidation of five existing ones.
Technology provides an industrial solution to the recycling of PET plastics and textiles (the dominant polymer in bottles, trays, and textiles made of polyester). The enzymatic recycling technology developed by Carbios deconstructs any type of PET plastic waste into its basic components, which can then be reused to produce new PET plastics of a quality equivalent to virgin ones. This innovation, the first of its kind in the world, was recently recognized in a scientific paper published in the prestigious journal Nature.
