Description

When it comes to cooling milk during milking, where efficient cooling is crucial for maintaining food quality, our system is specifically designed to meet the unique demands of this process. Milking typically occurs during peak times, in the morning and evening, when energy costs are highest and sunlight is limited. Therefore, it is essential to store cold in advance. Our technology uses specialized heat exchangers to cool the milk immediately after milking, before it is transferred to the tank, ensuring the temperature remains steady until it is collected by the milkman.
An ice storage system has been installed at a dairy farm in Saint-Bômer-les-Forges to store energy for cooling milk, which is the most energy-intensive task on the farm. Rapid cooling is particularly important for milk destined for camembert production, which exits the udder at 35-37°C and must be quickly lowered to 3-3.5°C. The milk cooling process can account for up to half of the farm’s total energy costs.

Impact & Result

The ice storage system allows for the delayed use of energy in the form of chilled water circulating through pipes. This system helps reduce energy costs, resulting in significant energy savings of 15 to 20%.

Solution Spotlight

Refrigeration accounts for over 20% of total energy consumption. It's everywhere: in air conditioning, food preservation and industrial processes. With the ever-increasing demand for Cold, it is crucial to include this sector in decarbonization and energy transition initiatives. BOREALES Energy offers an innovation that uses ice's unique ability to store and release thermal energy efficiently and sustainably. Like the cumulus hot water system, but applied to cooling, this technology enables the module to be thermally charged at the right moment (energy surplus from renewable sources or off-peak consumption periods) and discharged when it is most useful. “Storing a thermal effect produced with electricity is like storing electricity”. It stands out in particular for its compactness, scalability and performance, making it adaptable to specific user needs.
