story image

Description

In 2021, the patent linked to the 1st line (installed in Labat in 2017) was duplicated for the first time with a second BioVALO line, including a Paddle Depacker and OrgaPUR. This line was installed, in Normandy, France, on the exploitation of a farmer, who runs an organic digester, alongside his pig breeding activity. Therefore, in addition to the waste generated by his own operations and agricultural waste from other exploitations, the farmer can also receive packaged food waste, mostly coming from retailer stores waste via waste management companies and industrial waste from food industries (mono-streams). The current BioVALO installation pre-treats this packaged organic waste fraction before introduction into the organic digester. Beyond producing energy via the digestion process, the whole installation allows the return to the soil of the digestates remaining in the end, which can this way be diverted from incineration or landfilling, and used for soil improvement instead.

Impact & Result

The installation runs at a capacity of 20 kt of mixed organic waste per year. Out of these 20 kt are extracted 3 kt of packaging and 17 kt (+ about 1-2 m3/h of liquid added in the process) of organic soups. The line has an operating time of about 900 h/y at approx. 22 m3/h. In October 2024, the plan is to have the installation doubled, and its capacity brought to 40 kt/y.

Solution Spotlight

BioVALO is a turn-key solution to collect, sort and recycle organic waste (rejects from the food and agro industry, unsold goods from retailers, food scraps). This solution can be adopted by municipalities on household refuse, waste management companies or industrial groups on-site. BioVALO is a global solution involving complementary technologies, powered by partnering companies. The solution offers a uniquely efficient combination of engineering and techniques that pre-shred the incoming waste (if needed), pre-mix them, separate the organics contents from their packaging, refine the resulting organic soups, and clean and dry the packaging for potential further valorisation. Treated with BioVALO, organic materials become a resource that can be returned to the soil for fertilization, hence given back to nature.
