EBIKES4AFRICA designs and builds 24 e-bikes tailored to Namibia’s local realities and demands. Like all-terrain jeeps on two wheels, the bikes can handle rough roads while remaining affordable to maintain. Built locally by trained Namibian technicians, they feature steel frames, puncture-proof tyres, and solar-powered charging systems. The bikes are built for a wide range of users — from students and commuters to street vendors and entrepreneurs, the enterprise’s main target groups.
The project promoted sustainable mobility by deploying 24 solar-powered e-bikes and establishing a PAY E-HUB for charging and maintenance. It reduced carbon emissions, transport costs, and traffic congestion while creating local jobs, improving last-mile connectivity, and building technical skills in e-bike assembly and repair.
Access to transport and energy are often the main concerns faced by communities across Africa. With a lack of access to vital services, opportunities to reach markets, business areas, educational and health facilities become limited, and there's a pressing need for more affordable, effective and sustainable alternatives. In peri-urban areas in Namibia, people spend up to 1/3 of their disposal income on mobility needs. Mobility in the delivery industry is dominated by fuel-driven motorbikes (125cc), causing pollution, congestion and health risks. With e-mobility booming globally and Africa being the ideal continent for solar energy, Ebikes4Africa introduced electric two-wheelers, solar recharge stations and customised container hubs as a solution to communal needs. E-bicycles and e-scooters are designed to meet the challenging conditions of African environments and provide reliability at an affordable price, while an open-source approach facilitates self-service and maintenance. In addition, E-Hubs – modified shipping containers fitted with solar recharge and e-bikes – provide modular solutions to communities. The Hubs include an efficient DC/DC solar recharge system to charge a variety of Li-Ion batteries, which can be swapped to eliminate the inconvenience of waiting for the battery to charge. E-Hubs offer an easy to install, turn-key ready unit, also for remote or unserviced settlements.
