Maturity stage TRL 7 - Prototype testing in the real world

The small sized decentralized electrolyzer uses a redox mediator to decouple the water electrolysis reaction into 2 steps: (i) the 1st step which consumes electricity and releases oxygen gas at the anode; (ii) The 2nd step which generates hydrogen without energy consumption. At the end of the second step, the redox mediator is totally regenerated, and a new two-steps cycle can start again. Water is the only product that is refilled at each cycle. HyRiS possesses numerous advantages: the direct hydrogen production at high pressure due to a high equilibrium pressure and a simplified design thanks to separated O2 and H2 production eliminates the need for an external hydrogen compressor. HyRiS is able to store energy at the low power loads that are characteristic of renewable power sources, and then is able to provide hydrogen at a high reaction rate when needed. It integrates a chemical storage function (for e.g., it is possible to store electricity from a PV source and to produce hydrogen at night). Higher hydrogen purity compared to conventional systems, thanks to high pressure and batch operation, requiring no specific purification system for most applications.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Decouples energy consumption and hydrogen production.
  • Higher purity hydrogen.
  • No CO2 emissions during operation.

The Financial Benefits

  • Industry costs of around 5 000 EUR per year which is 40% less and 30% less compared to B50 delivery and alkaline solution respectively.
