Previously paper mill sludge was not suitable for biogas production due to its cellulose content. The material caused crusting, viscosity and mixing problems in biogas digesters and hard to digest cellulose did not release enough nutrients for biogas production. Epicellulyse XT is used in pretreatment of paper mill sludge and making it ideal for biogas process by transforming the waste negative value paper sludge into organic fertiliser and renewable energy. The secret sauce is its enzyme, Cellurise a whole cell biocatalysts which enables this technology.
