An autonomous convertible shelter to generate green electricity in isolated places

Identification

Energy access is one of the biggest challenges that need to be overcome in areas with no power access. The Containwatt vision is to provide an autonomous shelter with energy that comes from solar panels set up above the facility.

The whole facility is store in a 20'' Container that makes the solution easy to transport by ship, trucks on any desired place. Once solar panels are spread, the facility can provide up to 42kWp with a setup area from 70 m2 (45 solar panels) to 210 m2 (120 solar panels). Thanks to its plug and play system, the Containwatt is an easy way to get simultaneously electricity and base camp. Electricity management is driven by an automatic system that ensures the link between batteries, electricity production, and consumption. Sodium batteries can store up to 120kWh.

Implemented by Médecins Sans Frontières in Ouaddaï (Chad) in 2024

Médecins Sans Frontières is currently trialing Containwatt in eastern Chad to assist operations in the Ourang refugee camp, home to 50,000 people displaced by conflict in Sudan. In addition to a traditional generator, the container supplies power for various medical activities in Ourang, significantly reducing fuel consumption. Featuring modular spaces within 150 m2 tents suitable for offices and treatment rooms, this solution enables MSF to extend healthcare services to remote areas, saving lives while promoting renewable energy.

Result

Contained within a 20-foot container, this product can store up to 120 kWh, providing 42 kWp of power at remote sites.
