Identification

Globally, both coastlines and coral reefs are under threat. Ocean warming is increasing wave strength and causing coral bleaching on a massive scale. In nature, coral reefs provide protection to the coastline behind them, breaking waves before they hit the shore and thus reducing erosion.

CCell builds artificial reefs from recycled rebar, mimicking the shapes and properties of naturally occurring reefs. The reefs are powered with renewable electricity, producing a chemical reaction within the seawater that causes limestone rock to form around the reef structure. This rock provides a foundation for coral restoration and marine wildlife while strengthening the defensive properties of the reefs. CCell’s advanced modelling capabilities, combined with electronics and cutting-edge wave-energy capture technology, allows this solution to be customised for a given area. Local expertise, coral out-planting and education initiatives are able to support and boost this solution.
