From Netherlands
Maturity stage TRL 6 - Prototype testing 1:1 in lab

ETB developed a technology for producing bio-based butadiene from ethanol. The core is the unique catalyst with high selectivity to butadiene and conversion produced using industrial carrier. This catalyst allows to produce butadiene from ethanol with high yield at lower temperature with high work time before regeneration (at least 100 hours) and doesn't need complicated equipment that makes our solution competitive at market. Around 2.1tones of ethanol are needed to produce 1 tone of butadiene.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Catalyst can be reused more than 6 times
  • Selectivity for the butadiene is more than 82% (vs. 60% with the traditional technology)
  • Additional 43,6kg of bio-hydrogen for every 1ton of butadiene
  • 3x reduction of CO2 emission
  • 2x less energy consumption
  • Renewable raw material

The Financial Benefits

  • Annual revenue of €126M with 100kton/year butadiene capacity
  • About 4 years payback time
  • Independence of butadiene price from oil price
