Identification

UBQ Materials transforms unsorted household waste, including all organics such as food leftovers, cardboard packaging, and garden trimmings alongside mixed plastics and even dirty diapers, into the most climate-positive thermoplastic material on the market – the UBQ™ material. UBQ™ is a drop-in material that can be used by existing manufacturers to replace oil-based plastics to create products with a reduced or even negative carbon footprint, without compromising profitability. By using the UBQ™ material, manufacturers are diverting waste from landfills, preserving natural resources, and preventing methane emissions. Possible applications expand across many different industries, from logistics, furniture, and retail to automotive, construction, and even 3D printing. Every ton of UBQ™ prevents 11.7 tons of CO2eq from polluting the environment, leading LCA auditors Quantis to designate UBQ™ as ‘ The Most Climate Positive Thermoplastic Material on the Market’

Implementation Stories

UBQ™ thermoplastic material by UBQ Materials
Implemented by PepsiCo Brazil in São Paulo (Brazil) in 2022

PepsiCo, one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies, aligned with its global goal of achieving Net-Zero carbon emissions by 2040, announced use of UBQTM material in the creation of sustainable shipping pallets. Initially PepsiCo manufactured 830 ecological pallets for use in two of the company’s logistics centers in Latin America. Following the successful pilot, PepsiCo is extending the use of UBQTM in new product lines across Europe.

Result

Saved the equivalent of more than 6,500 kg of ghg emissions = equivalent to 534 trees co2eq sequestration

UBQ™ thermoplastic material by UBQ Materials
Implemented by McDonald’s in São Paulo (Brazil) in 2023

Arcos Dorados invited the public into the São Paulo McDonald’s restaurant beginning August 30, 2023, allowing visitors to explore the various sustainable solutions implemented throughout the branch. In addition to UBQ™-based components, Arcos Dorados has also integrated initiatives already implemented in several restaurants, such as condensation-based water recovery and renewable energy source for the restaurant, with other innovations including the wooden structure and recycling materials on the walls and floors

Result

Every kilogram of Israeli-manufactured UBQ™ replaces 1 kg of oil-based plastic, diverts 1.3 kg of waste from landfills and incinerators, and prevents up to 11.7 kg of CO2eq emissions measured over a 20-year time horizon.

UBQ™ thermoplastic material by UBQ Materials
Implemented by Mainetti in Tze'elim (Israel) in 2020

By closing a partnership with Mainetti, the largest producer of garment hangers and retail solutions in the world, UBQ will now have the opportunity to supply their clients with climate-forward garment hangers containing UBQ's climate-positive waste-converted material. Mainetti clients include fashion giants like Nike, Nordstrom, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Lewi’s.

Result

The development of Mainetti garment hangers containing UBQ™ material has resulted in hangers with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. These sustainable products are currently pending Cradle-to-Cradle (C2C)™ certification.

UBQ™ thermoplastic material by UBQ Materials
Implemented by AB InBev in São Paulo (Brazil) in 2021

UBQ Materials, a cleantech developer of advanced materials made entirely from waste, has announced the development of a pilot project with Ambev. The Brazilian subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev was introduced to UBQ Materials through their innovation arm, Beer Garage to integrate UBQ™, a climate-positive thermoplastic, into the production of Ambev’s packaging. Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer, is exploring the option of replicating the Brazilian pilot in Europe to confirm internationally scaled feasibility of UBQ™ to reduce the carbon footprint of various packaging materials.

Result

By diverting waste from landfills, every kilogram of UBQ™ produced prevents up to 12 kilograms of CO2eq from polluting the environment. For the single pilot project in Brazil, this means a reuse of over 650 kg of unrecyclable waste and the prevention of 5,800 kg of CO2eq.

03.

The environmental benefits

  • The UBQ conversion process uses zero water and creates zero effluents
  • 1 kg of UBQ™ material replaces 1 kg of oil-based plastics, such as PP and PE
  • Every ton of UBQ™ diverts 1.34 tons of landfill waste
  • Every ton of UBQ™ prevents 11.7 tons of CO2eq (GWP20) from polluting the environment. In GWP100, the amount prevented is 4.4 tons of CO2eq
04.

The Financial benefits

  • Price is competitive with traditional resins on the market, keeping the final product price tag the same when compared to products made with oil-based polymers
  • From 2017 to 2022, oil-based resin prices have increased by an annual average of 5.7%. With waste as a feedstock, UBQ provides long-term fixed prices regardless of market volatility
