Keiryo PET Solution - A systemic approach to address environmental footprint and recyclability trade-offs in plastics

The Keiryo PET solution is a manufacturing process that reduces the environmental footprint and manufacturing cost of plastic (PET) bottles. The Keiryo PET solution modifies the performance of the material during the injection process. This allows to produce PET containers using less virgin material and/or increase the uptake of recycled feedstock. Enhanced performance has been measured (up to 15% barrier improvement for carbonated soft drink containers). This result is achieved by integrating a patented 3D printed metal insert into existing industrial production assets. 3D printing enables low-cost manufacturing and global scalability. The KP technology generates a significant environmental impact that scales with its adoption and flows from the reduced use of materials. It will accelerate the transition to a Circular Economy as it reduces the amount of virgin plastic produced and increases the reusability of plastic waste. The technology is also applicable to bio-based feedstock.

Key features

  • The metal insert is 3D printed weights 20 grams, measures approx 6cm and is retrofitted into existing machinery in less than two hours
  • At the current development stage, performance enhancements can generate up to 15% material savings
  • Every ton of PET avoided, saves 2,2 tons of CO2
  • Every ton of PET saved reduces the amount of plastic leaking in the ocean by 9%

  • Low manufacturing cost of 3D printed inserts means payback time in 2/3 weeks
  • The technology can generate up to 735 million € savings per year in raw material for the industry

Maturity Stage

  • Medium and large scale commercialization
  • Small scale commercialization
