Aquilon CO2 CRAC Unit - A computer room air conditioning using carbon dioxide as a refrigerant to maximise its free cooling potential without releasing it outside

The Aquilon "CRAC" Unit is a computer room air conditioning unit. A single unit can remove the equivalent of 165,000kg, or more, of R-22 refrigerant, which 10% is estimated to leak into the atmosphere every year.

The data centre industry is an increasingly growing sector, as is its cooling needs. Most of the solutions offered in today's market include synthetic refrigerants which, in case of leaks, has a huge impact on global warming and ozone depletion. The solution aims at providing a unit that would remove synthetic refrigerants from data centres. The Aquilon unit uses 100% natural refrigerant. The computer room air conditioning unit has increased free cooling potential, without a pump or a compressor, because of carbon dioxide's thermodynamic properties.

Key features

  • A single unit can removes the equivalent of 165,000kg, or more, of R-22 refrigerant
  • The annual electrical consumption of a unit is more than 70% lower than a standard unit without free cooling capabilities
  • Reduction of global warming potential of about 2000:1

Profitability

  • Less than 3 years payback time
  • Reduction of energy consumption for cooling of about 70%
