Label Date June 26, 2020
From United Kingdom
Maturity stage TRL 9 / CRI 2 - Commercial Trial Small Scale

Millions of tonnes of wheat straw and other agricultural wastes are burnt or left to rot causing millions of tonnes of carbon emissions globally every year. EcoPulping is an innovative low carbon process that transforms agricultural wastes (e.g., cereal straw, reed, maize stover, and more) into unbleached paper pulp to be used for the production of paper, packaging or moulded products. The pulp produced is an alternative to pulp made from trees. With higher pressure on forests and growing demand for packaging products, new sources of fibre are needed. The patented EcoPulping process is using up to 50% less energy, 95% less water than traditional pulping processes and is economic even at a small scale. Chemicals and liquids are re-used in a closed-loop system, by-products used as fertiliser/soil conditioner or for industrial applications. A perfect example of circular economy and carbon reduction!

The Environmental Benefits

  • 120,000t of straw from being burnt or left to rot = 9,500 tonnes of CO2 saved
  • reduce energy consumption by 270,000 GJ (the equivalent of 27,000 Tonnes of CO2)

The Financial Benefits

  • Payback between 3 to 8 years depending on the type of plant
  • Investment cost per tonne of pulp up to 1/3 of traditional pulping
