Preventing undesired emissions by rebalancing microorganisms populations in animal farming

Identification

Kopros® is a "Chemical Free" solution to reduce the ammonia produced by animal manure before it is emitted into the atmosphere, resulting in farms with greatly reduced emissions and better animal welfare.

Ammonia and other gases are generated in animal husbandry due to poor activity of the micro-organisms present in the manure. Kopros® rebalances and reactivates these natural microorganism populations so that the correct mineralization and humification activities can take place, and the elements are fixed in the manure/mud instead of being released into the air as gases. The main reason for ammonia emissions is due in particular to a high concentration of animals on small areas, and that the manure is also stored in a very concentrated way. In this situation, elements such as nitrogen, sulfur and other elements become toxic to the microorganisms, which eliminate them by producing gas, which has an impact on the well-being of the animals and their productivity.

Implemented by Farm in Goldau in Goldau (Switzerland) in 2019

In Goldau (SZ), the Kopros product was used on a farm of 500 fattening pigs on a grid with a pit of around 200m3, between 2019 and 2020. The first treatment (9/10/2019) was carried out on the pig rearing area with a double dose (2 kits), and later with a single dose. Data was collected at 9 different locations in the buildings on a monthly basis (portable ammonia detector), for 6 months.

Result

The use of Kopros resulted in an average reduction of 50% in the treated areas compared with the control area.
