Opella
Compiègne
Sanofi Opella, a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry, has set an ambitious target to reduce its CO₂ emissions by 70%. At its site, the company turned to TERRAO in 2024 to cut fossil fuel use and increase energy efficiency. TERRAO installed its TERRAOSAVE solution, designed to recover heat from flue gases and repurpose it for process water heating. TERRAO uses a stainless-steel heat exchanger that diverts flue gases from the chimney and mixes them directly with circulating water. This process recovers heat for reuse while also capturing pollutants such as dust, fine particles, CO₂, NOx, metals, and acidic compounds for later treatment.
With a recovery capacity of 700 kW, the system fully covers the site’s hot water demand, drastically reducing fuel reliance. This project forms part of the plant’s wider decarbonisation roadmap, demonstrating how innovative waste heat recovery can support industrial transition.
The Sanofi Opella project benefited from 50% government funding, ensuring a return on investment in less than two years. Without subsidies, ROI would have been four years, still highly attractive with a 25% return rate.
A novel stainless steel heat exchanger solution extracts emissions by a bypass installed on the chimney. In TERRAO, different from traditional heat exchangers, the fumes mix directly with water in circulation. This process allows not only for energy reuse through thermal transfer but also for the retainment and subsequent treatment of pollutants, including dust, fine particles, CO2, NOX, metals, and acids in gaseous or solid form.
