High Speed Rail (HSR)
Birmingham
The High Speed Rail (HSR) Washford Heath Depot project office had been facing a recurring challenge each summer. As the temperature rose outside, the building would become unbearably hot inside, creating uncomfortable working conditions for staff. To cope, the team relied heavily on air-conditioning units, but even with constant use, the office often remained overheated.
Looking for a solution, the office turned to Window Insulation, who recommended their innovative Retrofit Coating. This advanced, transparent coating is applied directly onto glass and is designed to filter sunlight in a very specific way. By selectively blocking infrared wavelengths, it prevents unwanted heat from entering in the summer and escaping in the winter. Importantly, the coating achieves all this without noticeably darkening the windows, maintaining natural daylight and a clear view outside.
Office temperatures dropped by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, making the indoor environment far more comfortable. The coating also reduced the solar energy passing through the glass by a factor of seven, which in turn slashed the demand for air-conditioning. Energy savings averaged an impressive 57% compared to the previous baseline, significantly lowering running costs for the depot. In total, the installation covered 42.8 m² of glazing, at a cost of £150 per square metre.
Window Insulation® offers a low emissivity coating designed for retrofitting existing windows, delivering proven energy savings and improved occupant comfort. Unlike traditional low-e coatings applied during window manufacture, this solution can be easily applied to any window type, shape, or style after installation. Its technology mirrors that of low-e coatings but outperforms some factory-applied options in durability and performance. Compared to applying a low-e film, retrofitting with this coating brings several benefits: it is twice as durable, poses no fire risk, and ensures a seamless finish.
